Imagine for a moment that you are driving on a road and you suddenly realize that you are heading in the wrong direction! What do you do? Take the next U-turn. Right? Yes, It's a way to get back on track.
A few years back, I was traveling from Chennai to Calicut by train. I was supposed to get down at Calicut at four in the morning, but I slept off! By the time I realized my blunder, I had gone too far. I got off the train at the next station, bought a ticket and headed back to Calicut. Now, three things were essential in this U-Turn. One, I needed to know where I had to go. Two, I needed to realize and admit when I was heading in the wrong direction and three, I had to be willing to change the direction of my journey.
Without these three things, no matter how fast and thrilling the train ride might be, I will never reach home!
In the Bible, a theme that appears over and over again is repentance - a U-Turn of the heart! But why do we need to change? What’s wrong with me, we may ask? A closer look into our hearts will reveal why. The Bible says that the sin in man has set him on the road to destruction. We often make choices that self-centered. We use words that hurt others. We get addicted to things that destroy our resources and productivity. Our motives are often impure. The list goes on.
In the maddening rush of our daily lives, we seldom pause to ponder where we are heading.
To make a U-turn, we need know the right way.
In a fast changing world, where opinion polls define morality, God’s word - the Bible - is our road map for right living.
We must constantly compare our lives with God’s standards and look beyond our pride and self-righteousness and admit our sins. We also need to have a desire to change. We may find ourselves powerless in making a U-turn in our lives, but God’s strength is available. The Bible says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
Saint Augustine rightly said,“You have made us for yourself, O God, and our hearts are restless until it finds its rest in you.”
May we pause for a moment to look at our hearts. Are we restless, on a run away from God? May we return to him because only He is big enough to fulfil our deepest longings.
Go ahead, take the next U-turn!
